American no.1 seed John Isner made his way into the second round at the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in Newport as he defeated Ukrainian qualifier Sergei Bubka 7-6 (3)  4-6  6-3.

Isner, who is the defending champion after beating Olivier Rochus of Belgium in last year’s final, will play Frenchman Nicolas Mahut in the next round. The American will be going into the match with a 3-1 head to head record against Mahut, with their most memorable encounter being played at Wimbledon in 2010, where Isner prevailed 70-68 in the decider.

Canadian Milos Raonic came back from a set down to beat Australian Matthew Ebden 3-6  6-3  7-5. He relied once again on his big serve as he fired 26 aces to turn the match around and book a second round encounter against German qualifier Benjamin Becker, who overcame Belgian David Goffin in straight sets 6-4  6-3.

Also through to the next round are American wild card holder Jack Sock after eliminating Igor Kunitsyn of Russia 7-5  1-6  6-4, another American Sam Querrey with a two sets 7-5  7-6 (5)  win over Russia’s Alex Bogomolov Jr. and American Rajeev Ram after defeating Grega Zemlja of Slovenia 6-3  6-1.

Rajeev Ram has won this tournament three years ago as he defeated American Sam Querrey in the final.
