7th seed Ernests Gulbis broke the hearts of local fans at Kitzbühel by coming from a set down to beat Austrian wildcard Andreas Haider-Maurer. The Austrian started out strong, racing to a 3-0 lead in the first set and eventually winning it 6-2. Gulbis, however, remained vigilant and the pair traded breaks in the second set. Eventually, the 7th seed’s persistence proved to be too much and coming from match point down, Gulbis broke Haider-Maurer’s serve to take the second set 7-5. By the third set the Latvian had found his rhythm and won an impressive 12 out of 15 service points in addition to breaking his opponent’s serve three time. In the end, Gulbis won the match against the hometown favorite 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 in just over 3 hours.

Gulbis will play the Brazilian Rogerio Dutra Silva who received a walkover after his opponent Jan Hajek was forced to retire down 1-4 in the first set.
