Today saw play in the main draw of the WTA’s Baku Cup tournament which is being held at the Baku Tennis Academy in Azerbaijan’s capital city.
Two seeds were in action in the first round, with one winning and one losing. Third seed Mandy Minella of Luxembourg, ranked 78, was victorious over the Chinese qualifier Qiang Wang, but it was a see saw match. Minella won the first set with relative ease 6-2, but Wang managed to snatch the tight second set 7-5. The deciding set went Minella’s way, 6-3, in a match which lasted two and three quarter hours.
The other seeded player was Andrea Hlavackova of the Czech Republic, who was seeded fourth and has a WTA ranking of 88. In a hard fought three setter, the Serbian, Aleksandra Krunic took the victor’s spoils with a score of 6-1 6-7 (11-9) 6-4 in a match which lasted close to three hours. Double faults were a feature of this encounter, with Hlavackova, who is known for her booming serves and numerous aces in most of her matches, failing miserably today with 18 double faults to Krunic’s eight.
Four doubles matches were also played. The only match featuring seeds was the number one seeded pairing of Nina Bratchikova and Alexandra Panova who prevailed in straight sets, 6-3 6-4, over Minella and Marta Domachowska of Poland.
