The record-breaking, 17-time Grand Slam champion and all-round tennis master that is Roger Federer has claimed to be “undecided” as to whether or not he will be Switzerland’s official flag-bearer for the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony.

Having already performed flag-bearing duties for his native country at two other summer Olympic games, he confirmed today that despite being “offered” he may give “another athlete the chance” of carrying the flag on the world’s stage. The question is, who? What other Swiss sportsperson is there that is able to equal Federer in terms of achievement, skill and profile – after all, you don’t make it onto the Forbes Top 100 list unless you’re a pretty big somebody!

Just one day after winning an incredible seventh title at the 2012 Wimbledon Championships following an arduous and emotional four-hour battle against our British hope Andy Murray, Federer confirmed that an announcement as to whether or not he would be flag-bearer at the Games once again would come “in the next 10 days or so.” It’s certainly an honourable move by the ever-gracious tennis star, but after his tremendous comeback this season – regaining the world number 1 spot and racking up those Grand Slam wins – here at SteveG we can’t think of any other Swiss athlete who would be more deserving. Can you?
