Last year’s finalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga crashed out of this year’s AEGON Championships at the Queen’s Club as he lost to Croat Ivan Dodig in today’s third round.

Dodig prevailed in three hard fought sets, winning 7-6 (3)  3-6  7-6 (5) in 2 and a half hours.

Both players had a chance to take each other’s serve, Tsonga in the second and Dodig in the 11th game, but neither of them could capitalise and the set went into a tiebreak. The Croat got off to a quick 4-0 lead that proved to be sufficient for him to wrap up the set.

The second set started with 6 straight breaks, the Frenchman to be the first one to hold serve to take a lead. He then went on to break his opponent once more and forced a decider.

Tsonga had three big opportunities to take Dodig’s serve in the 6th game of the third set, but failed to convert any of them and the London crowd was all set for another tiebreak showdown. Both players held their serves until 6-5 in the Croat’s favour, when Tsonga hesitated and a forehand unforced error handed Dodig the victory.

In the other third round matches, Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov defeated Nicolas Mahut of France 7-6 (3)  6-4, 9th seeded South African Kevin Anderson overcame no.5 seed Feliciano Lopez of Spain 7-6 (10)  7-6 (7) and American Sam Querrey eliminated 8th seeded Julien Benneteau of France 6-3  3-6  6-3.
