2012 Roland Garros champion Rafael Nadal started his Gerry Weber Open debut successfully as he beat Slovakia’s Lukas Lacko in the second round today, winning 7-5  6-1.

The Spaniard went up a break when he took Lacko’s serve in the 4th game of the opening set, but the Slovak fought back, levelling the score at 3-3. Although Nadal couldn’t convert the first set point he had at 5-4 on Lacko’s serve, the world no.2 struck in the 12th game again. After a lenghty game (6 Deuces), he broke his opponent’s serve to close out the set.

Lacko didn’t seem to be able to challenge the Spaniard in the second set, Nadal allowing him only one game and setting up a quarterfinal match against Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany.

Also through to the last 8 is Tommy Haas, who defeated another Spaniard Marcel Granollers 6-3  6-4.
