Nadal had a perfect 8-0 head to head record against the German going into today’s match.
But it was Kohlschreiber who got off to a dream start, breaking the Spaniard in the second game and taking a 3-0 lead. Nadal kept his chances to win the set alive after he managed to save a couple of break points in the 4th game, but the German didn’t wilt under pressure and held his serve to close out the set in just over 30 minutes.
Nadal had a massive opportunity to take Kohlschreiber’s serve in the fourth game of the second set, but failed to convert any of the break points when 40-0 up on the German’s serve. The key moment of the set came in the 7th game, when the French Open champion dropped his serve once more and Kohlschreiber kept his cool to sail to a fine victory, reaching the last 4.
In the semis, the German will play against the winner of the match between Berdych of Czech Republic and Haas of Germany.
Nadal will be heading back to Mallorca to get some well deserved rest just before the start of the Wimbledon championships.
