Aftrer the Frenchman stormed to take the first set in just 26 minutes, Matosevic fought his way back and with no breaks of serve, the second set went into a tiebreak. With Gasquet producing a couple of unusual forehand unforced errors, the Australian grabbed the opportunity and forced a decider.
It was Matosevic, who managed to take Gasquet’s serve in the 9th game of the third set, but failed to serve out the match and the British crowd were going to witness another ‘breaker’. Once again, the Australian kept his composure and rallied to a fine victory, setting up a third round match against Steve Darcis or Marcos Baghdatis.
In the remaining first round matches, Andy Roddick got through after fellow American Sam Querrey was forced to retire when trailing 5-2, German Philipp Kohlschreiber eliminated Go Soeda of Japan in straight sets 6-4 7-5 and Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan ousted Frenchman Michael Llodra 6-4 6-3.
