Second seed Spaniard Rafael Nadal won his opening match at the Mutua Madrid Open after defeating Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko 6-2  6-2 in 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Nadal struck in the third game of the first set and then again in the 5th to go up a double break. Davydenko couldn’t find any answers to the solid baseline game of the Spaniard and the world no.2 comfortably held his serve to seal the set.

Just like in the first, two breaks of serve in the second set were more than sufficient for the Spaniard. Nadal took Davydenko’s serve in the opening game and once more in game 7 to take a 5-2 lead. There was no way back into the match for the Russian and with this win, Nadal set up a third round clash against his countryman Fernando Verdasco.

Verdasco fought back from a set down to defeat Colombian qualifier Alejandro Falla, winning 6-7 (4)  6-4  6-4.

Also through to the third round is the Frenchman Richard Gasquet after beating Viktor Troicki of Serbia 7-5  6-3.

Gasquet’s next opponent will be the winner of tonight’s match between the Swiss world no.3 Federer and Canadian Raonic.
