The Austrian got into the Madrid quarterfinal in 2010, just before he went on to reach the semifinal at the French Open, defeating Serbian Djokovic on his way.
In round two, Melzer will play Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland, who defeated Belgian Olivier Rochus 6-4 7-6 (3).
Also through to the next round is 15th seed Fernando Verdasco of Spain after dismissing Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan 7-5 6-2.
Verdasco’s next opponent will be Colombian qualifier Alejandro Falla, who ousted Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina 6-3 2-6 6-2.
