Wild card holder Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain won his first round match at the Mutua Madrid Open against Marcos Baghdatis with a scoreline of 6-4  3-6  6-4.

The Cypriot Baghdatis played at this tournament for the fourth time in his career, but has never been able to reach more than the second round.
