Last week’s Estoril Open champion Juan Martin del Potro booked his place in the second round of the Mutua Madrid Open as he eliminated Florian Mayer of Germany 6-4 6-2.
After the first set loss, Mayer started to look a bit erratic and too many unforced errors allowed the 10th seed Argentine to take a 4-0 lead in set 2. A little confrontation with the umpire fired Del Potro up even more and he sailed to a comfortable victory.
In round 2, Del Potro will play Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny, who defeated Spanish wild card holder Javier Marti 6-3 6-2 in his first round match.
6th seed Berdych of Czech Republic won his second round match after beating Kevin Anderson in two sets 6-4 6-3.
Berdych’s next opponent in round three will be the winner of the match between Igor Andreev of Russia and Gael Monfils of France.
