World no.1 Novak Djokovic won’t be able to defend his Mutua Madrid Open title this year after losing to his countryman Janko Tipsarevic in straight set 7-6 (2)  6-3  in today’s quarterfinal.

Djokovic seemed to be a lot more confident on his serve in the first set. It was Tipsarevic who had to save four break points to take the set into a tiebreak, where he took a quick 4-0 leadand with some heavy ground stokes dominated it to wrap up the first set.

Both players held their service games until the 5th game of the second set, when Tipsarevic broke Djokovic to 15 and held his serve to take a 4-2 lead. The defending champion got into more trouble in the 8th game of the set when serving to stay in the match. Facing three match points at 0-40, he came up with some superb serves that kept his hopes alive. Despite having break point opportunities in the next game to get back into the match, Tipsarevic managed to avert them and clinch the match after 1 hour and 42 minutes.

In tomorrow’s semis, Tipsarevic will face Federer, who defeated Spaniard Ferrer 6-4  6-4.
