Frenchman Gilles Simon captured his 3rd Bucharest title as he beat Italy’s Fabio Fognini in Sunday’s Nastase Tiriac Trophy final, winning 6-4  6-3.

This was the first tour final for Fognini, but he started the match with some confidence, going 2-0 up. It was followed by a couple of breaks on either side, just before Simon managed to take Fognini’s serve once more for a 4-3 lead. After holding serve till the end, Simon captured the first set and got a step closer to the title.

It was Simon who domitated the second set, breaking his opponent in the 5th game to go 3-2 up. After Fognini dropped his serve once again in game 9, the set and the match was all over.

Simon booked his place in the final by defeating German Matthias Bachinger and Fognini dismissed Atilla Balazs of Hungary.
