Gilles Simon beat his French compatriot and no.4 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 7-5  6-4 and moved into the Monte Carlo Masters semifinals.

Tonga got off to a very slow start, dropping his serve twice to allow Simon a quick 3-0 lead. He managed to get those breaks back and level the set at 5-5, but a loss of concentration cost him one more service game and gave Simon the first set.

Neither of the players were at the top of their games today and Tsonga used his opponent’s lack of consistency to take a 4-1 lead in the second set. But what happened after that, only Tsonga can explain. He started to produce one unforced error after another and Simon raced to a 6-4 set and match win.

Simon will play the 7 time champion Rafael Nadal in Saturday’s semis, who overcame the Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka in straight sets 7-5  6-4.
