Nadal is without a title since winning last year’s Roland Garros, but this is exactly what happend in 2011 too. His first victory of the season came in Monte Carlo and then he went on to win the French Open.
Both players fought toe-to-toe at the beginning of the first set, Simon having two break point opportunities at 3-3 and 15-40 on Nadal’s serve. But the Spaniard dug deep and not only did he hold, he managed to take Simon’s serve in the very next game to take a 5-3 lead. Nadal then went on to serve out the set and got a step closer to his title defence.
The only break of serve in the second set went to Nadal as he took a 2-1 lead. Simon had his chances to break back, but the Spaniard always came up with an answer and managed to held to love when serving for the match at 5-4.
Nadal will play Djokovic for this year’s trophy and it will be their second final meeting in Monte Carlo. In 2009, the Spaniard got the upper hand on his way to victory.
Djokovic battled back from a set down to beat Tomas Berdych 4-6 6-3 6-2 to book his place in the final.
