Former world no.3 David Nalbandian gave everything against his opponent Marin Cilic of Croatia in the Davis Cup quarterfinal encounter between Argentina and Croatia, but it was Cilic who had more reasons to be happy at the end of it. His five set win 5-7  6-4  4-6  7-6 (2)  6-3 gave Croatia a 1-0 lead.

Cilic had the physical egde at the end of a 5 hour and 9 minutes marathon match, in which there were plenty of unforced errors and five breaks on each side. But it was Cilic who got the only break in the fifth set and it proved to be enough to clinch the precious point for Croatia.

In the second singles match of the day, Juan Martin del Potro took on Ivo Karlovic. The Argentine Del Potro didn’t waste any time on court and got down to business as he sailed to a three sets victory 6-2  7-5  6-1 to level the quarterfinal tie at 1:1.

Tomorrow’s doubles will be between David Nalbandian/Eduardo Schwank and Marin Cilic/Lovro Zovko.
