James Blake lost his first round match at the Houston Men’s clay court Championships against the sixth seed Carlos Berlocq of Argentina 4-6  6-2  1-6.

Despite Berlocq suffering from a calf injury and needing a treatment in the second set, the Argentine managed to recover quickly. After losing the second set and the first game of the decider, Berlocq outplayed Blake as he won the next six games and booked his place in the second round.

Also through to the next round is the American Sam Querrey, who defeated Eric Prodon of France 6-1  6-4.

In the other matches, Igor Kunitsyn of Russia beat the Belgian Xavier Malisse 6-4  6-2, and Bjorn Phau of Germany got through as his opponent Diego Junqueira of Argentina retired at 6-1  3-0 in Phau’s favour.

The no.1 seed Mardy Fish and the second seeded John Isner got a first round bye.
