Juan Martin del Potro secured the third and winning point for Argentina in their Davis Cup quarterfinal encounter against Croatia.
Del Potro didn’t give his opponent Marin Cilic any chance as he cruised to a 6-1 6-2 6-1 victory. The match lasted only 2 hours and 19 minutes and it was clearly visible that Cilic was a bit worn out after he had to play 10 sets in the previous two days.
The last singles encounter between Juan Monaco and Antonio Veic was just a formality and the Argentine Monaco sealed the fourth point for his country, winning 6-1 6-1.
Argentina will host Czech Republic in the semifinal (to be played in September).
Czech Republic revenged their 2010 Davis Cup semifinal defeat against Serbia, beating them this time 4-1 in front of a packed stadium in Prague.
World no.7 Tomas Berdych was the man of the day, securing the winning point for the Czechs. Berdych defeated world no.8 Janko Tipsarevic in three hard fought sets 7-6 (6) 7-6 (6) 7-6 (7).
Tipsarevic had his chances throughout the match, especially in set 3, but he couldn’t convert any of the 5 set points he had against Berdych. The Czech showed some real fighting spirit and after winning the last point, he fell flat on his back and the celebrations could begin.
In the last match of the day, Lukas Rosol then defeated Viktor Troicki in straight sets 7-6 (5) 7-5.
