Jo-Wilfried Tsonga reached the last 16 at the Indian Wells Tennis Masters after defeating the Czech Radek Stepanek in three sets 6-7 (2)  6-3  6-2.

There were no breaks of serve in the first set, and so it had to be decided in a tiebreak. Stepanek played some superb tennis to take it 7-2 and go one set up.

The first break of serve came in the 8th game of the second set, and it was the Frenchman who earned it. As he held serve in the following game he levelled the match and forced a decider.

Tsonga stepped fired up into set no.3, confident on his own service games, he managed to break Stepanek again, this time in the fifth game. The Czech seemed a bit down from this moment on and one more break of serve in the Frenchman’s favour was more than enough to take the set 6-2 and book a place in the last 16.

Tsonga’s next opponent will be the winner of the match between David Nalbandian of Argentina and Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia.
