John Isner joined his compatriot Roddick in round three of the Indian Wells Masters.

Isner beat the Portuguese lucky loser Frederico Gil in straight sets 7-5  6-3. The American has got a good chance to break into the top 10 of the rankings for the first time in his career. Everything will depend on his performance in this year’s tournament. His next opponent will be Juan Monaco of Argentina.

Mardy Fish is also through to the 3rd round. His opponent Andreas Seppi of Italy retired at 6-3  3-2 in Fish’s favour. Fish will have to play the Australian qualifier Matthew Ebden next.

Kei Nishikori of Japan lost a surprisingly easily against Santiago Giraldo of Colombia 7-5  6-2. Nishikori was going into the match with a 2-0 head to head record against the Colombian, having won their last meeting in Shanghai in 2011.
