The no.1 seed David Ferrer of Spain secured his spot in the semifinals of the Mexican Open as he defeated his countryman Pablo Andujar 6-2  6-4.

Ferrer, having just won last weeks tournament in Buenos Aires, will try to win his 3rd title in Acapulco. He will now play Santiago Giraldo of Colombia, who dismissed Carlos Berlocq of Argentina 7-5  3-6  6-4.

In the other quarterfinals, Fernando Verdasco of Spain ousted the two time champion Nicolas Almagro 6-4  7-6 (5). Almagro was the one to lose last week against Ferrer in the Buenos Aires final.

Verdasco will face Stanislas Wawrinka next, who beat Jeremy Chardy of France 7-5  6-1.
