World no.1 Novak Djokovic put on a strong performance as he defeated the no.5 seed Spaniard David Ferrer in straight sets 6-2 7-6 (1) and booked his place in the semifinal of the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami.
Djokovic managed to take his opponent’s serve in the 3rd and the 5th game of the first set to go 5-2 up. He closed it out with a confident service game and was with one foot in the semis.
The first two games of the second set went against the serve and there were no more breaks until the 9th game, when Djokovic took Ferrer’s serve and gave himself a chance to serve for the match. But the Spaniard dug deep and came back into the match, levelling the set at 5-5. As both players held their serves in the next two games, the tiebreak had to decide the faith of the second set. The defending champion Djokovic showed his class again and he allowed Ferrer only one point to take the match.
Djokovic will play Monaco next, who beat Mardy Fish 6-1 6-3.
