No.7 seed Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic beat the American former world no.1 Andy Roddick 6-3 4-6 6-2 and moved into the last 16 of the Indian Wells Tennis Masters.
Roddick, who has been struggling with some injuries this year, is still trying to find his form from his best years on the tour. Last weeks win at the MSG Exhibition against the Swiss former world no.1 Federer might have given him some confidence, but it just wasn’t quite enough against the big hitting Berdych.
Berdych started the match with some solid hitting from the baseline and he managed to break Roddick twice in the first set.
But the American fought back and levelled the match as he took his opponent serve in the seventh game of the second set and held serve to seal the set.
The third set saw a rejuvenated Berdych to take full control once again. With two breaks to his good he sailed to a 2-1 set victory.
Berdych will play the 12th seed Nicolas Almagro of Spain next, who beat the Colombian Santiago Giraldo 4-6 6-2 7-6 (2).
Other American rising star Ryan Harrison won his match against the Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-4 7-5. It is a big win for Harrison and he will play for a quarterfinal spot against the French Gilles Simon, who ousted Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland 6-4 6-4.
