Japan’s Kei Nishikori caused an upset at this year’s Australian Open as he defeated  former finalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 2-6, 6-2, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.

Nishikori made history as he became the first ever Japanese tennis player to reach the quarterfinals of the Australian Open since the Open Era began in 1968. Only one more Japanese man managed to get to a Grand Slam semifinal, and it was Shuzo Matsuoka when he reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals in 1995.

Nishikori will now play last year’s finalist Andy Murray for a place in the semifinals.
