Former Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova beat second seed Petra Kvitova 6-2  3-6  6-4 and moved into the 2012 Australian Open final.

This semifinal encounter between the Russian and the Czech was a rematch of the 2011 Wimbledon final, in which Kvitova prevailed.

Sharapova started very strong, taking the first set 6-2. Kvitova got her focus back at the start of the second set and got off to a quick 3-0 lead. She held on tight and closed the set out 6-3.

The third set was a lot more even and Sharapova held her nerve at the end of it as she managed to break Kvitova in the last game of the set to seal the match.

The Russian was a lot better converting break points (5 out of 5) as opposed to the Czech (3 out of 14) and this turned out to be the key to her success. She will play Victoria Azarenka in the final, who defeated the defending champion Kim Clisters 6-4  1-6  6-3.

For Sharapova, this could be the fourth Grand Slam title of her career, second Australian Open title after winning here in 2008.
