It was only the second loss of her career for Serena Williams at Melbourne Park.

She went out surprisingly to the Russian Ekaterina Makarova in the last 16 of the 2012 Australian Open, Makarova winning 6-2 6-3.

The 23 year old Russian played agressive tennis throughout the match and Williams seemingly wasn’t on form. She made too many unforced errors and couldn’t quite dominate the baseline rallies the way she is normally used to.

Serena is a five times Australian Open champion and this defeat surely is a big shock for her.

Makarova will now play the winner of the match between Maria Sharapova and Sabine Lisicky.
