Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal moved one step closer to set up a possible semifinal encouter against each other at this year’s Australian Open.
Roger Federer overcame Australian talent Bernard Tomic, beating him 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 and qualifying so for the 31st consecutive major quarterfinal.
The match started a bit slower than Roger is used to, with no breaks until the ninth game.
“It was like boxing in the beginning. You don’t want to take too many chances,” said Federer after the match about the beginning.
Federer will play his 1000th tour level match against Argentine Del Potro in the next round.
Rafael Nadal dismissed his fellow Spaniard Feliciano Lopez 6-4 6-4 6-2.
Nadal needed treatment for his ankle in the third game of the first set, but he seemed fine after that and sealed the match in straight sets.
“I am fine, it was a very, very hot day. I think it’s positive to keep winning in straight sets.” said Nadal after the match.
He will play Czech Berdych or Spaniard Almagro in the quarterfinals.
