US Open champion Samantha Stosur of Australia reached the quarterfinals of the Japan Open, defeating Misaki Doi of Japan 6-2, 6-4.

She will now play seventh seed Chanelle Scheepers of South Africa for a place in the semis.

Marion Bartoli of Italy beat the American Vania King 6-1, 6-2 to reach the quarterfinals. She will face Ayumi Morita of Japan next.

    It’s great that Stosur won. Who cloudn’t be glad for her? It’s also great that she has such a ladylike demeanor. Which she does. But since when did fist pumping behavior, and come on verve become a negative? At this point, so many players express their competitiveness with this behavior that the television commentators usually note the lack of it as an indication of a player’s confidence and energy level. It’s not always becoming to the player male or female. But there is an implication here that doesn’t go down well.
