Sampras defeats Courier in the Champions Cup opener

Former world no.1 and 14 time Grand Slam winner Pete Sampras won the HSBC Tennis Cup, the first event of the 2011 Champions Series.

He defeated fellow American Jim Courier 8-6 in th finals after beating Michael Chang in the semifinals with a score line 6-4.

Courier overcame Jimmy Connors in the semis, eliminating him 7-5. For Connors, this was the first competitive match in 11 years.
