World no.2 Rafael Nadal is through to the second round at the Shanghai Masters after beating his fellow countryman Guillermo Garcia Lopez 6-3, 6-2.
The Roland Garros 2011 champion will next face Florian Mayer of Germany who defeated David Nalbandian of Argentina 6-3, 6-4.
British no.1 Andy Murray had a walkover as his second round opponent Dmitry Tursunov of Russia withdrew from the match. Murray will next play Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland who eliminated the American Donald Young 6/7 (5), 6-4, 7-5.
Kei Nishikori of Japan surprisingly beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France 6-7 (1), 6-4, 6-4 in the second round.
Tsonga is still fighting for a place at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London. He is eight in the rankings at the moment, which is the last qualifying spot.
In other matches, Tomas Berdych beat fellow Czech Radek Stepanek in straight sets 6-4, 6-3, German Florian Mayer ousted former world no.3 David Nalbandian 6-3, 6-4 and Gilles Simon of France eliminated Albert Montanes of Spain 6-1, 6-1.
