Eight seed Christina McHale of the United States lost her first round match at the Japan Open against the defending champion Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand.

World no.11 Marion Bartoli of Italy is through to the second round after beating Melinda Czink of Hungary 6-2, 6-2.
