Kirilenko through to second round in Luxembourg

Maria Kirilenko of Russia advanced to round two at the Luxembourg Open after her opponent Carla Suarez Navarro retired due to an ankle injury at 7-6 (5), 3-6, 3-0.

In other first round matches, Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain overpowered Anne Kremer of Luxembourg, not allowing her a single game as she won 6-0, 6-0. Austrian Tamira Paszek ousted Ekaterina Makarova of Russia 6-2, 6-2 and Czech’s Iveta Benesova eliminated Pauline Parmentier of France 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Top seed at the Luxembourg Open is Victoria Azarenka of Belarusia and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova is no.2.
