American Mardy Fish and Czech Radek Stepanek are both through into the second round at the Japan Open Tennis Championships.

No.4 seed Fish overcame a scare when beating fellow American Ryan Harrison 6-4, 3-6, 7-5. The 19 year old Harrison had to qualify for the main draw and he put up a good fight. He was a break up in the third set but Fish held his nerve and turned the set around.

“It was very close. He played well, I played well, so it was a very good match. I was lucky to win today. Anybody can win today,” said Fish in the after match interview.

Fish will now play either Ernest Gulbis or Lukasz Kubot in the second round.

Seventh seed Radek Stepanek, last year semifinalist in Tokyo, defeated Somdev Dewarman of India 6-4, 6-3.

In other matches Australian Ebden caused an upset by beating Spain’s Pablo Andujar 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-4 and world nr.237 Marco Chiudinelli surprisingly beat Spaniard Garcia-Lopez 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.
