World number 1 Novak Djokovic had to withdraw from one of his favourite tournaments in Shanghai because of a back injury. There had been signs of a back problem in his US Open final match against Spain’s Nadal and he had to withdraw from the Davis Cup semifinal match against the Argentine Del Potro for the same reason.
The Serbian has got a 64-3 match record this year and many experts rate it as one of the best ever in tennis history.
Former no.1 Federer also withdrew from the tournament as he decided to rest a few weeks before returning to his hometown tournament in Basel on 31st October.
