No.2 seed Maria Sharapova was forced to retire in her quarterfinal match against Czech Petra Kvitova at the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo. The Russian twisted her ankle with Kvitova leading 4-3 in the first set and it didn’t look promising for her as she immediately called for a trainer. This was a rematch of this year’s Wimbledon final, where the Czech beat her in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.

Kvitova will now play against Vera Zvonareva, who beat her Russian compatriot Maria Kirilenko comfortably 6-3, 6-3. The semifinals match is scheduled for Friday.

her pull out was not the same as Serena's at IW baucese she addressed the crowd. What a load of manure no? It's the same. But she won't be called on it baucese, as Larry Scott has decreed she is the "Golden Girl".
